India, Iran Sign Long Term Contract For Operations At Chabahar Port To Boost Regional Connectivity

Tehran: In a significant milestone for the India-Iran relationship and to foster close cooperation to make Chabahar Port a regional trade transit and connectivity hub, the two countries on Monday signed a long-term contract for operating the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal in presence of Indian and Iranian Ministers.

The Indian delegation to Iran was led by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, while Mehrdad Bazrpash, Minister for Roads and Urban Development, was present from the Iranian side.

During his visit to Tehran, Sonowal witnessed the signing of a new 10-year Contract between India Ports Global Ltd (IPGL) and the Ports & Maritime Organisation of Iran (PMO).

Under the Contract, IPGL will commit to further equipping and operating the port for the duration of the Contract. At the end of the 10-year period, both sides would further extend their cooperation in Chabahar.

IPGL will invest approximately 120 million USD in equipping the port. India has also offered an IN credit window equivalent to USD 250 million, for mutually identified projects aimed at improving Chabahar-related infrastructure.

The Chabahar Port is an India-Iran flagship project that serves as an important transit port for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries, which are landlocked countries. India has been a key player in the development and operation of Chabahar Port.

The Indian government has invested in the port's infrastructure and has been involved in upgrading its facilities to make it a viable transit route for Indian goods bound for Afghanistan and Central Asia.

In August 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.

Both leaders discussed the pending long-term Contract on Chabahar, and gave a clear political direction to finalise and sign the long-term Term Contract.

Speaking at the meeting, Sarbananda Sonowal called this a 'historic milestone' and stressed that it "symbolises the enduring trust and deepening partnership between India and Iran."

"Today, India and Iran have reached a historic milestone in their longstanding relationship, driven by the visionary ideals of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" championed by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under PM Modi's leadership, the momentous agreement that began on 23rd May 2016 is culminating today in a long-term contract, symbolizing the enduring trust and deepening partnership between India and Iran", Sonowal said during his meeting with the Iranian minister Mehrdad Bazrpash.

"The Chabahar Port is an India-Iran flagship project. Today, as we witness the signing of the long-term contract for operating the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal, I am confident that a firm, sustainable, and long-term roadmap for developing the port has been established", he added.

In August 2022, Sarbananda Sonowal visited Chabahar Port in Iran to review its work progress and handed over six mobile harbour cranes to Indian Ports Global Chabahar Free Trade Zone (IPGCFTZ) at the port then.

During his meeting, the Indian minister further underscored India's vision of making the port an international hub of connectivity and how it has continued its outreach with regional countries to expand trade and transit through Chabahar Port.

"We have continued our outreach to promote the Chabahar Port and also facilitate transit. In 2022, India organized the "Chabahar Day" in Mumbai with a focus on fostering closer cooperation between our countries and the wider region to enhance inter-regional trade and economic connectivity," he said.

Sonowal went on to say how this port is serving an important transit port with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries and how India has helped landlocked Afghanistan.

"Chabahar Port is serving as an important transit port for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries, which are landlocked countries. Afghanistan is passing through a difficult phase. Over the past few years, we have supplied 85,000 metric tons of wheat and 200 metric tons of pulses as humanitarian food assistance. We also sent 40,000 litres of pesticide Malathion to Afghanistan through Chabahar port", said Sonowal.

Terming the recent visit of a high-level delegation from Afghanistan to Chabahar port as 'positive', the Indian minister underlined the need to facilitate trade for Afghanistan and help Afghan people to stand on their own feet.

In 2022, India organised "Chabahar Day" in Mumbai with a focus on fostering closer cooperation between our countries and the wider region to enhance inter-regional trade and economic connectivity.

In January this year, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during his visit to Iran met Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development and discussed establishing a "long-term cooperation framework" for Chabahar Port, a strategic maritime facility situated on the south-eastern coast of Iran.

In a post on X, Jaishankar stated, "Began my engagements in Tehran by meeting Minister of Roads and Urban Development @mehrdadbazrpash. Detailed and productive discussion on establishing a long-term cooperation framework with respect to Chabahar port," said Jaishankar in a post on X, then.

Their discussions also focused on the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

"Also exchanged views on the International North-South Transport Corridor," Jaishankar's post added.

India's vision is to make Chabahar Port a transit hub under the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) to reach out to CIS countries.

In August last year, PM Modi held talks with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and the two leaders reiterated their commitment to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, including to realise the full potential of Chabahar Port as a connectivity hub.

"The two leaders reiterated their commitment to further strengthen bilateral cooperation, including to realize the full potential of Chabahar Port as a connectivity hub," the Prime Minister's Office said in a press release.

The Chabahar port, located in Iran, is a key component of India's connectivity initiatives, holds immense significance as it provides a viable and shorter route for trade between India, Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia.

Chabahar is a deep water port located in the Sistan-Baluchistan province of Iran. It is the closest Iranian port to India, and is located in the open sea, providing easy and secure access for large cargo ships.

During the visit of Prime Minister Modi to Iran in May 2016, a trilateral agreement to establish the International Transport and Transit Corridor (Chabahar Agreement) was signed by India, Iran and Afghanistan.

India is participating in the development of the first phase of the Shahid Behesti Terminal, Chabahar Port, in cooperation with Iranian government.

So far, India has supplied 06 Mobile Harbour Cranes (two 140 tons and four 100 tons capacity) and other equipment worth USD 25 million.

The Indian company, India Ports Global Limited (IPGL), through its wholly owned subsidiary, India Ports Global Chabahar Free Zone (IPGCFZ), took over the operations of the Chabahar Port with effect from 24 December, 2018.

Since then, it has handled traffic of more than 90,000 TEUs of Container traffic and more than 8.4 MMT of Bulk and General Cargo. The port has also facilitated the supply of humanitarian assistance, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Till date, a total of 2.5 million tons of wheat and two thousand tons of pulses have been trans-shipped from India to Afghanistan through Chabahar Port. In 2021, India supplied 40,000 litres of environmental friendly pesticide (Malathion) to Iran to fight locust menace.

Earlier, the Indian Embassy in Iran, in a post on X stated, "Hon'ble Minister @sarbanandsonwal held a fruitful meeting with his esteemed Iranian counterpart @mehrdadbazrpash. Discussed furthering the shared vision of making Chabahar Port a regional connectivity hub connecting India to Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Eurasia."

'We Counter-Deployed, Sent Record Number of Troops To Border': Jaishankar On Border Stand-Off With China

Mumbai: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday that despite a challenge from China, India has counter-deployed and sent a record number of troops to the border.

"I think we need to get the China issue right...Yes, there is a challenge from China, yes, it has violated agreements and sent a large number of troops to the border. But the country should take pride in the fact that, despite COVID, we counter-deployed and sent a record number of troops to the border. Those troops today are holding their own," Jaishankar said.

Notably, Jaishankar's remarks came during a conference held at the National Stock Exchange Plaza in Mumbai.

"The country should be supporting the military, country should not be running them down...This running down your own people, your forces is a sad thing. A lot of the country is very unhappy about it," the EAM said.

Speaking further, he slammed the opposition for blaming PM Modi for Nehru's actions that were taken in the past.

He said, "Indian land was taken by China between 1958-1962...When you say land taken by China, please understand that this land was lost in 1962...I see efforts made to mislead the country..."

"People are saying Chinese are building villages on the border. Where is the village built? It is built in a place called Longzu, which the Chinese attacked and occupied in 1959. There is a statement of Nehru. So, we look at the google map, look at that village and triangulate it with what Nehru said in 1959" Jaishankar said, giving an example .

"Then Rahul Gandhi and the Congress talk about the bridge in Pangong Pso in Ladakh. This bridge is being built at a place where the Chinese came in 1958 and then retook it in 1962. Recently, I saw a congress spokesperson say the Chinese have built a road in Shaksgam Valley, and this has great concerns for Siachin," he said.

"Possibly it has concerns for Siachin," he noted, however, adding that the "Shaksgam Valley was allowed by Nehru to be part of Pakistan occupied Kashmir, and Pakistanis handed it over to China in 1963."

"So Congress is holding Modi responsible for Nehru's actions in 1949 and Bhutto's actions in 1963. But apparently, they have no culpability..." Jaishankar said.

Amid border tensions, in March, India and China exchanged views on ways of achieving complete disengagement and resolving the issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Western sector of India-China border areas.

Meanwhile, India, in January this year, while reiterating its long-standing position on China, said the two countries continue to engage on the diplomatic and military sides for some sort of resolution.

"India's position on China is very well known. It is a relationship, which is not normal, but we have had dialogues both on the military side and on the diplomatic side in October and November. And the idea is that we engage so that we can have some sort of resolution," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Official Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during weekly media briefing previously.

The two countries have been in a military standoff for the last three years since May 2020, when the Chinese tried to aggressively alter the status quo on the Line of Actual Control.

Why Has Violence Erupted In Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir? Why Are Activists Seeking India's Help?

A poster (Right) demanding for a merger with India dot the streets in PoK’s Muzaffarabad

On Saturday, protests in PoK's Muzaffarabad turned violent, leading to the death of one police personnel and causing injuries to many others.

Unrest has gripped the area of Muzaffarabad and Rawalkot in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after violent clashes, killing one police official and injuring 100s of others, took place over the weekend. Following the violence, people in PoK are seeking India’s help, and chanting slogans of Azadi, Roshneesh Kmaneck reported

Chants of ‘Azadi’ ring out loud in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) while posters demanding for a merger with India dot the streets in the region. The area remains on edge after massive protests saw at least one police officer dying and over 100 others being injured. Normal life has been affected as businesses in PoK’s Muzaffarabad and Rawalkot remain shut owing to the widespread protests and violence in the region.

But what led to this tension in PoK? Why have protests erupted in this region? And what are authorities doing to bring back peace there?

Who Is Protesting In Pok And Why?

On Friday (10 May), the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) had called for a shutter-down and wheel-jam strike in PoK’s Muzaffarabad. The group, which represents traders of the region, had called for the strike to protest against rising inflation, and to demand tax-free electricity from the Mangla Dam. Moreover, they are calling for subsidies on wheat flour and an end to the privileges enjoyed by the elite class.

What Led To The Clashes?

Last Wednesday and Thursday, the Pakistan authorities had arrested around 70 JAAC activists during raids in Muzaffarabad. This became the catalyst for the shutdown and strike over the weekend.

On Saturday (11 May), the members and supporters of the JAAC gave a call for a long march towards Muzaffarabad. However, to stop the march from moving forward, police resorted to teargas shelling, which affected people in their homes and mosques after demonstrators pelted stones.

Videos and photos soon began circulating on social media showing police using batons on the protesters, in an attempt to disperse the crowds. Noted security analyst Sushant Sareen posted on X: “PoK is up in flames”.

Other videos and posts also showed Pakistan police using batons to beat the protesters quite violently.

PoK activist Amjad Ayub Mirza was later quoted as telling news agency ANI that Pakistani forces had shot at unarmed civilians, and at least two had been killed in the clashes.

Meanwhile, The Dawn reported that one police official had died in the clashes while another 90 had been injured. Mirpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kamran Ali told the Pakistani newspaper that Sub-inspector Adnan Qureshi succumbed to a gunshot wound in the chest in the town of Islamgarh, where he was deployed to stop a rally for Muzaffarabad under the banner of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC).

Videos online also showed protesters, however, also hitting back. Some videos showed protesters beating security personnel with sticks and chasing them away.

Stone pelting and violence instigated by Pakistan were commonplace occurrences in Kashmir back when I was the Corps Commander there.

Today Kashmir is peaceful & prospering, while POK is on the boil. See people's anger against their security personnel.

Following the clashes, the Awami Workers Party (AWP) slammed the crackdown on the protesters. A statement by the AWP, as per a report in The Dawn read: “The AWP leadership is deeply concerned about the deployment of paramilitary forces in the area and the subsequent use of repressive tactics, including the arbitrary arrest of hundreds of political activists. Such actions only serve to incite further unrest among the populace.”

It denounced the use of force against the protesters, adding, “It is distressing to see the suppression of legitimate demands, particularly those related to the unjust taxation on electricity bills and the lack of access to essential resources. Federal and state authorities have failed to meet local needs despite substantial generation of electricity from power houses in the region.”

What Next?

There’s unease in PoK on Monday after the deadly clashes with many traders opting to keep their shutters down.

PoK’s prime minister Anwarul Haq urged the protesters not to indulge in violence, and said he was ready to accept their demands. Moreover, the AP reported that President Asif Ali Zardari had convened a meeting to discuss how to calm the protests.

Pakistan prime minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed concern over the situation in PoK. Deeply concerned about the situation in AJK.

However, PoK activist Amjad Ayub Mirza called for an intervention by the Indian government. He said in an interview with news agency ANI, “India cannot remain aloof from the current situation in Pakistan-occupied Jammu Kashmir. At the moment, our people are fighting. The whole of Pakistan-occupied Jammu Kashmir has been shut down by peaceful protesters who are being beaten up and shot at by the Pakistan police, Punjab police… India now should focus all its attention on Pakistani-occupied Jammu and Kashmir and help and facilitate the independence of this occupied territory, including Gilgit-Baltistan.”

Mirza added, “The situation is getting worse by the day. India must act. India has to act. India must not follow the footsteps of previous governments where they thought that by ignoring Pakistani-occupied Jammu and Kashmir it can be business as usual. It is not business as usual. And if today the Indian government does not step up their efforts to free PoJK and Gilgit-Baltistan then this golden chance of our freedom will wither away.”

Have Similar Protests Occurred In PoK Earlier?

These clashes in PoK resemble the ones that took place in August 2023 . At the time, the protesters had gathered in Rawalakot and torched thousands of electricity bills. Their demands were similar even then: reduce the cost of electricity and provide cheaper wheat flour.

A Crane, Helicopter, Communication Satellite: ISRO's Mangalyaan-2 Plans Revealed

India aims to become the third country on Earth to land a spacecraft on another planet and join the elite club

ISRO is already working on the second Mars mission. It will feature a rover, and helicopter combination. The mission will be launched aboard the heavy-lift LVM-3. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is betting big on its second mission to Mars after the historic success of Mangalyaan.

The Indian space agency, which is already working to develop the second mission to Mars, has revealed how it plans to land its mission on the Red Planet. The feat has only been achieved by the United States and China until now.

India aims to become the third country on Earth to land a spacecraft on another planet and join the elite club. New details were released during a presentation on National Technology Day at the Space Application Centre revealing the big plans for the next-door cosmic neighbour.

ISRO is already working on the second Mars mission, which will feature a rover and helicopter combination the same as Nasa's Perseverance rover. The presentation showed that the Indian space agency is working on developing a supersonic parachute, and a sky-crane for deploying the rover on the Red Planet.

The mission will be launched aboard the heavy-lift Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM-3) to Mars.

The sky crane won't be the first to be used to deploy the rover, Nasa developed the sky-crane system to land its highly precise and successful Perseverance rover on Mars. This system allows for a controlled and precise landing, avoiding the need for airbags or ramps. The Sky Crane ensures that the rover lands upright and ready to begin its mission, even in challenging terrain. ISRO will be developing the technology catered to the Indian rover.

Indian engineers are also working on the design and development of a fully functioning helicopter to fly in the thin Martian air. The rotorcraft is in the conceptual stage and will carry several instruments.

The UAV will carry Marble a.k.a the Martian Boundary Layer Explorer, that will have a suite of payloads for aerial exploration of Mars. The aerial vehicle will be designed to be capable of flying up to 100 meters in the thin Martian air to profile the Martian atmosphere.

Meanwhile, to ensure proper communication with the Mars mission, ISRO is also planning to deploy a relay communication satellite ahead of the mission launch. The satellite will be launched aboard the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle to act as a relay between Mars and Earth to ensure smooth uninterrupted communications.

It is worth mentioning that the time it takes for signals to travel between Mars and Earth varies based on their relative positions. At opposition, when Mars is closest to Earth, signals can take around 3 to 22 minutes to travel one way. However, during conjunction, when Mars is on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth, signals can take around 6 to 44 minutes one way.

'Open To Investigation': EAM Jaishankar Denies Receiving Evidence of Indian Involvement In Canada's Terrorist Nijjar Killing

Mumbai: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has once again denied receiving any evidence implicating Indian nationals' involvement in the killing in Canada of India-designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Responding to media queries here, Jaishankar stated, "I also read that another arrest has been made. If that person is an Indian national, then usually by consular practice, you inform the government or the embassy of the country of origin. But beyond that, we have long maintained that if anything, any event in Canada, any violence in Canada, has any evidence or information which is relevant to be investigated in India, we are open to investigating it."

He emphasised that while any Indian national's arrest would usually prompt notification to the government or embassy, no specific evidence justifying investigation by Indian agencies has been received to date.

"But to date, we have never received anything which is specific and worthy of being pursued by our investigative agencies. And I'm not aware anything has changed in the last few days in that regard," the External Affairs Minister said at a media interaction at a seminar on Indian Capital Markets 'Roadmap for Viksit Bharat' at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai on Monday.

The Canadian Police on Saturday arrested a fourth suspect over his alleged involvement in the killing of Nijjar, Canada-based CBC News reported.

Nijjar was killed outside the Gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18. The accused has been identified as Amandeep Singh (22).

According to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) in British Columbia, Singh was already in the custody of Peel Regional Police in Ontario for unrelated firearms charges.

"IHIT pursued the evidence and gained sufficient information for the BC Prosecution Service to charge Amandeep Singh with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder," the police statement said.

The police said that Singh is an Indian national, splitting his time in Canada in Brampton, Ontario; Surrey, British Columbia, and Abbotsford, British Columbia, as reported by CBC News. Investigators haven't given any further details of the arrest, citing ongoing investigations and court processes.

This comes days after the Canadian police arrested three Indian nationals -- Karan Brar, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh -- in Edmonton. The trio was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder in relation to the homicide.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency in 2020, was shot and killed as he came out of a Gurdwara in Surrey in June last year. The attack was described as 'highly coordinated' and involved six men and two vehicles. Notably, the Canadian police has not given any evidence of any link to India, as was being speculated in Canadian media.

Nijjar's killing triggered diplomatic tensions between Canada and India after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged India's hand in the killing -- a claim New Delhi has rejected, calling it "absurd" and "motivated."

Earlier this week, the Ministry of External Affairs reiterated that Canada has not provided any "specific" evidence or relevant information in the Hardeep Singh Nijjar killing case and that no "formal communication" has been provided to India over the arrests of three Indians allegedly involved in the matter."No specific or relevant evidence or information has been given to us in this matter. Canada has informed us about the arrest. But we have not got any formal communication..." MEA Spokesperson said on the arrest of three Indian nations in Canada in Nijjar killing.

On being asked if India has given consular access to the three Indians arrested in the Nijjar Killing case, the MEA said that they have not received any request from the Canadian side for the same as the accused have not asked for the consular access yet.

'Now, You Know Who Delayed Bullet Train': EAM Jaishankar Attacks Opposition, Highlights India's Growth Under PM Modi

Mumbai: In a scathing attack on opposition, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday that India has made tremendous progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government over the years, and the country's growth was delayed when the opposition was in power.

Speaking on the bullet train project, Jaishankar said that they want to keep India in the same situation as before, adding, "We are on the side of the bullet train project. Now, you know who delayed the bullet train. So, this is an example of who is in favour of technology, progress, and the project, and who is clearly against it."

Speaking at a seminar on Indian Capital Markets at the National Stock Exchange, Mumbai, Jaishankar highlighted India's growth under BJP's tenure.

Jaishankar also spoke at length on how BJP is on the side of 'Make In India' in terms of economy, technology, and development, adding that, "the Congress Party and the opposition parties say that manufacturing cannot happen in this country. Without manufacturing, you can imagine how technology will grow in India."

"Because manufacturing and technology work together. So, in a way, we were backwards before, we were left behind. They want to keep us in the same situation. We are on the side of the bullet train project. Now, you know who delayed the bullet train. So, this is an example. that which technology, which progress, which is on the side of the project, which is against it," the EAM said.

Quoting other examples to demonstrate the progress made under the PM Modi government, Jaishankar pointed to the development of 5G technology in India.

"And I can give a lot of examples of this. Modi government, if today you have 5G technology in your phone, this 5G technology is made in India," said Jaishankar.

Meanwhile, Jaishankar also asserted that the possible signing agreement between India and Iran will pave the way for bigger investments and will connect India to Central Asia.

"On the Chabahar agreement, my understanding is my cabinet colleague Sarbananda Sonawalji is today going to Iran and it is expected that we would see the long-term agreement between India and Iran on Chabahar. We've been running it on the basis of ad hoc arrangements. This is not because of any problem on the Indian side. The issue was really there was a lot of problems as to exactly who the combination of partners would be in Iran," he said.

In a significant milestone for the India-Iran relationship and to foster close cooperation to make Chabahar Port a regional trade transit and connectivity hub, the two countries on Monday signed a long-term contract for operating the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal in presence of Indian and Iranian Ministers.

The Indian delegation to Iran was led by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, while Mehrdad Bazrpash, Minister for Roads and Urban Development, was present from the Iranian side.

'India To Become Major Maritime Player Under PM Modi's Leadership': Union Minister Sonowal On Chabahar Port Deal

Tehran: Commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday said that under PM Modi's leadership India is on its way to becoming a major maritime player with a formidable supply chain network.

India and Iran on Monday signed a long-term contract for operating the Shahid-Beheshti Port Terminal to foster close cooperation to make Chabahar Port a regional trade transit and connectivity hub.

Union Minister Sonowal emphasised that the Chabahar Port's significance transcends its role as a mere conduit between India and Iran and serves as a vital trade artery connecting India with Afghanistan and Central Asian countries.

"This linkage has unlocked new avenues for trade and fortified supply chain resilience across the region. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is on its way to becoming a major maritime player with a formidable supply chain network," he said.

Moreover, the establishment of regular ship calls between Chabahar Port and Indian ports has instilled stability and confidence among traders, offering them visibility and predictability in their supply chain operations.

Following the development, Sonowal, while speaking at the meeting, stressed that the momentous agreement that began on May 23, 2016, is culminating today into a long-term contract, symbolising the enduring trust and depending partnership between India and Iran.

Calling it a "historic day for the maritime sector of the region", Sonowal said that India and Iran signed this Long Term Agreement on Chabahar Port heralding a new age of trade, and marine cooperation as well as transhipment while boosting trilateral trade among India, Iran and Afghanistan.

He further lauded PM Modi's leadership and said, " India's sustained engagement in Chabahar underscores its role as an anchor for Indian trade in the region while enhancing its role in the Global Supply Chain."

India will use the port for humanitarian aid shipments reaffirming its commitment to support regional development beyond commercial interests, showcasing its commitment to fostering goodwill and stability in the region.

Moreover, he highlighted that the project will also encourage Indian entrepreneurs to venture into the region as envisaged by PM Modi.

"As envisaged by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, this project is also about encouraging Indian entrepreneurs to venture into the region from long-term prospects. The port's integration with a Special Free Zone augments its appeal, while India's incentives, such as concessions on vessel-related charges and cargo charges, bolster trade flows through Chabahar, fostering economic growth and cooperation," he said.

"The invaluable guidance by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji turned this project into a viable reality with a long-term outlook," Sonowal said.

India-EU FTA 'Most Difficult, Complex' Due To Non-Trade Issues: EAM Jaishankar

Mumbai: Terming the India-European Union Foreign Trade Agreement (FTA) the "most difficult FTA," External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar said on Monday that it is the most difficult one because there are a lot of non-trade issues involved in this FTA.

EAM Jaishankar was speaking to the media at a seminar on Indian Capital Markets 'Roadmap for Viksit Bharat' at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai. He emphasized that this FTA is an important trade priority.

"An FTA with the European Union is the most difficult FTA, most complex FTA to do because there are a lot of non-trade issues involved in that FTA. So we are confident that we will certainly, on our side, try to take it forward," the EAM said.

"But typically, I'd be honest, because, again, what had happened was we lost a lot of time in between because of changes of positions. I mean, what has happened has happened. So we are definitely very serious about pushing it," he said.

If they go into the next term, Jaishankar assured, that this FTA will be one of the important trade priorities.

"My expectation is going into the next term, if all goes well with us, it will definitely be one of our important trade priorities," he said.

Jaishankar further praised the Union Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal, who is contesting the ongoing Lok Sabha elections on BJP ticket from Mumbai North constituency in Maharashtra.

"I must say, since we are talking trade if there is one person who has made a huge difference when it comes to commerce and trade, it is my colleague, the commerce and industry minister, who is a candidate from Mumbai," he said.

He continued, "I think his personal role in taking forward the Australia agreement, the UAE agreement, the EFTA agreement, the progress we have made in the UK, with the EU, and with the Gulf."

Last week, Jaishankar along with his wife Kyoko Jaishankar attended Europe Day celebrations in the national capital and noted that the ties between India and the European Union are not only consequential for the two sides but also for the world.

Describing the relationship between India and the European Union as "consequential for the world as well," EAM Jaishankar said the EU is not only "our largest economic partner," but the ties run "very deep, spanning many domains."

Notably, the EU is India's third largest trading partner, accounting for Euro 88 billion worth of trade in goods in 2021 or 10.8 per cent of total Indian trade.

Moreover, India is the EU's 10th largest trading partner, accounting for 2.1 per cent of EU total trade in goods.

'PoK Was, Is And Always Will Be Part of India': EAM Jaishankar Amid Ongoing Protests In Muzaffarabad

Mumbai: Amid the intensified protest against the Pakistan government in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday reiterated India's stand on merging the illegally occupied region and said that "one day we will end the illegal occupation of the POK and the POK will join with India."

"These days, a lot of things are going on at the POK. You must have seen some incidents happening there. Now, Modi government, we are very clear on this. Parliament's resolution, we are very clear that POK is a part of India. It is part of India, it was always part of India, it will be part of India," EAM said during a media interaction at a seminar on Indian Capital Markets 'Roadmap for Viksit Bharat' at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai.

"And we definitely have this intention. that one day we will end the illegal occupation of the POK and the POK will join with India. Now you see that the opposition is in the opposite direction," he added.

The minister also questioned "who wanted to run Article 370, who was interested in it" referring to the criticism after Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was abrogated by the BJP-led government in August 2019.

"If I talk about the record, then in the last five years, one of our great achievements was on Article 370. And we will also say that the NDA's record and the NDA's thinking, the Modi government's thinking is that how to integrate Kashmir with the country, how to further develop Kashmir. On the other hand, you see who wanted to run Article 370, who was interested in it. So this is also a very clear choice in front of the country," he said.

EAM also commented on Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah remarks that "they (Pakistan) are also not wearing bangles" and will attack us, saying that leaders are so afraid of Pakistan's nuclear weapons that they believe India should not talk about PoK with Pakistan.

"Farooq Abdullah reminds us not to talk about POK because Pakistan has nuclear weapons. We are proud of India's nuclear weapons. On the contrary, Pakistan's nuclear weapons seem to be more important. If it is Manish Shankar Iyer or Farooq Abdullah, they are so afraid of Pakistan's nuclear weapons that they think that we should not talk about POK. So I will say that whatever is the issue of security, we are on the side of CAA, our intention is to take CAA forward. They are the prisoners of the vote bank," he said.

"And from the beginning, the minorities who had to come to India from their neighbouring country, they were never worried about them. They never thought about the injustice done to them," he added.

The situation remained tense in PoK on Monday as the total strike against high prices of wheat flour and inflated electricity bills and taxes entered its fourth day, with the Pakistan government stepping up efforts to de-escalate the situation following deadly clashes between security forces and protesters.

Amid a wheel-jam strike persisting for the fourth consecutive day in PoK, a long march spearheaded by the Awami Action Committee (AAC) set off for the PoK capital, Muzaffarabad, Geo News reported.

Protesters have already initiated sit-ins, effectively shutting down the Kohala-Muzaffarabad Road at various points along its 40-kilometer stretch, which connects Kohala town with Muzaffarabad in PoK. Their route from Dhirkot is expected to lead them to the capital.

The PoK government deployed Rangers and police following clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators in Mirpur. These clashes resulted in the death of a police officer and leftover 70 others injured.

Heavy police contingents have been stationed at key points and sensitive areas, while markets, trade centres, and educational institutions remain shuttered, and transportation services remain suspended.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a high-level meeting to address the ongoing situation in PoK, as negotiations between protesters and the state government reached an impasse, according to Geo News.

Long March Heads For Muzaffarabad In PoK As Wheel-Jam Strike Enters Fourth Day

Muzaffarabad: Amid a wheel-jam strike continuing for the fourth consecutive day in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), a long march led by the Awami Action Committee (AAC) set off for the PoJK capital, Muzaffarabad, as reported by Geo News on Monday.

Protesters have already started sit-ins, effectively shutting down the Kohala-Muzaffarabad Road at various points along its 40-kilometer stretch, which connects Kohala town with Muzaffarabad in PoJK. Their route from Dhirkot is expected to lead them to the capital.

The PoJK government deployed Rangers and police following clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators in Mirpur. These clashes resulted in the unfortunate death of a police officer and left over 70 others injured.

Heavy police contingents have been deployed at key points and sensitive areas, while markets, trade centers, and educational institutions remain shuttered, and transportation services remain suspended.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a high-level meeting on Monday to address the ongoing situation in PoJK, as negotiations between protesters and the state government reached an impasse.

Expressing grave concerns over the violent clashes, PM Shehbaz emphasized zero tolerance for vigilantism, stressing the importance of upholding the rule of law.

He spoke about having discussion with PoJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Anwarul Haq and directed all Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) office bearers in PoJK to engage with the action committee leaders.

"I urge all parties to pursue peaceful means for resolving their demands. Despite the efforts of detractors, I'm hopeful the matter will be resolved soon," the Prime Minister said.

In an effort to de-escalate tensions, President Asif Ali Zardari urged all stakeholders to exercise restraint and resolve issues through dialogue and mutual consultation.

Highlighting the need for responsible action, President Zardari said that addressing the demands of the people of PoJK within the framework of the law was imperative. He assured to discuss PoJK's grievances with PM Shehbaz to seek a resolution.

Expressing regret over the situation, the President offered condolences for the police officer's death and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured in recent clashes.

The AAC's central leadership has however distanced itself from the violent incidents during the protests. An AAC member, Sajid Jagwal, said that for two days, they had conducted themselves peacefully without incident.

Tauseef Mansoor, another member, said that the committee bore no responsibility for the isolated incidents during the protests.

Anjuman Tajran President Sahabzada Waqas clarified that the protest was not against the state or any institution. He reaffirmed their allegiance to the nation and its institutions.

The AAC had called for a shutter-down and wheel-jam strike across the state as a mark of their protest against electricity price hikes and taxes. However, the situation escalated as clashes broke out between protesters and police.

During the clashes, a sub-inspector lost his life. Several policemen and protesters also sustained injuries following tear gas shelling and stone-pelting incidents.

The protesters' actions also led to the vandalism of multiple vehicles, including a magistrate's car, along the Poonch-Kotli road. Additionally, markets, trade centers, offices, schools, and restaurants remained closed across PoJK.

In response to the violence, police launched a massive crackdown and arrested dozens of individuals in the PoJK capital.

Telecommunication and internet services were also suspended in various parts of PoJK, including Bhimber and Bagh Towns. In Mirpur, all mobile networks and internet services remained suspended.

PoK Govt's Offer of 50 Per Cent Reduction In Electricity Prices Rejected By Protestors Amidst Clashes

Vigorous clashes between police and protesters, Indian tricolour flying high in PoK

Muzaffarabad: Jammu Kashmir Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has rebuffed the Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) government's offer of a 50 per cent reduction in electricity prices per unit, insisting on rates aligned with hydropower generation costs, as reported by ARY News.

According to sources, the government proposed a 50 per cent decrease in electricity rates per unit, a proposal promptly dismissed by the Kashmir action committee. They assert that consumers should be charged based on the production cost of hydropower in PoJK.

Simultaneously, the government is gearing up to subsidise flour prices. Nevertheless, the Public Action Committee has declared a long march from Rawalakot to Muzaffarabad, rejecting the government's stance on the matter.

The protesters plan to halt in Kotli overnight during the long march. Committee member Umar Nazeer criticized the government's lack of seriousness regarding their demands.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the PoJK government had agreed to all demands of the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) following negotiations between the JAAC delegation and the territory's Chief Secretary at the residence of the Rawalakot Commissioner.

Sources indicate that the government has also agreed to the committee's demand for flour subsidies and to rescind the electricity bill hikes.

Violent clashes erupted between police and activists of a rights movement in PoJK amid a wheel-jam and shutter-down strike across the territory. The clashes resulted in the death of at least one police official and injuries to several others.

Sub-inspector Adnan Qureshi succumbed to a gunshot wound in the chest in Islamgarh, where he was deployed to quell a rally for Muzaffarabad under the banner of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC).

The JAAC, led by traders in most parts of the state, has been advocating for electricity pricing aligned with hydropower generation costs in PoJK, subsidised wheat flour, and an end to elite-class privileges.

Violent protesters vandalised multiple vehicles, including a magistrate's car, on the Poonch-Kotli road. Additionally, markets, trade centres, offices, schools, and restaurants remained closed across PoJK, ARY News reported.

Amid a resumption of the march in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made pledges to address the 'genuine demands' of the protesters. However, despite efforts, an agreement between the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee and the PoJK government remained elusive, with the protest movement pressing forward with its march on Muzaffarabad, Dawn reported.

Following clashes that resulted in the death of a policeman, relative calm settled over the region, though business centers remained shuttered and public transport suspended in Muzaffarabad and Poonch divisions. Mirpur saw a partial strike, signaling the depth of sentiment driving the protests.

The impasse persisted even after talks between the JAAC core committee and PoJK Chief Secretary Dawood Bareach ended without progress in Rawalakot. A protester from Rawalakot accused the government of employing evasive tactics, exacerbating tensions further, as reported by Dawn.

Participants in the discussions included figures from various regions, including Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Kotli, and Bagh. However, hopes for a breakthrough were dashed, as one participant, Sardar Umar Nazir Kashmiri, lamented the lack of tangible outcomes, accusing the government of deception and delay.

Russia Captures Four More Villages In Ukraine's Northern Kharkiv Region

Moscow: A day after Russia claimed to have captured five villages after launching a fresh ground assault in north-eastern Ukraine, Moscow has now gained hold of four more villages in the northern Kharkiv region, CNN reported, citing Ukraine's top general on Monday.

Although a Ukrainian regional official acknowledged that ground combat was spreading, he maintained that Russia had not made "significant" progress to date.

As per CNN, it is unclear as of now, exactly what Russia hopes to achieve with this fresh campaign, which started early on Friday morning.

According to information from the Defence Ministry in Moscow, Russia now claims control over nine Ukrainian border villages, which are clustered in two areas, now just a few dozen kilometres apart, to the northeast of Kharkiv city.

The Russian forces captured five villages after launching fresh ground assault in north-eastern Ukraine, Al Jazeera reported on Sunday, citing the Russian Ministry of Defence.

However, the Ukrainian officials did not confirm whether Russia had taken the villages, which lie in a contested "grey zone" on the border of Ukraine's Kharkiv region and Russia.

Al Jazeera reported, citing several Ukrainian journalists, who said that the villages of Borysivka, Ohirtseve, Pylna and Strilecha were taken by Russian troops on Friday.

Russia claimed that the village of Pletenivka was also taken.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday evening (local time) that fighting was continuing in Strilecha and Pletenivka, as well as Krasne, Morokhovets, Oliinykove, Lukyantsi and Hatyshche.

"Our troops are carrying out counterattacks there for a second day, protecting Ukrainian territory," he said.

Earlier on Friday, the Institute for the Study of War said that geolocated footage confirms at least one of the villages was seized. The Washington-based think tank described recent Russian gains as "tactically significant."

The renewed assault on the region has forced more than 1,700 civilians residing in settlements near the fighting to flee, according to Ukrainian authorities.

It comes after Russia stepped up attacks in March targeting energy infrastructure and settlements, which analysts predicted were a concerted effort by Moscow to shape conditions for an offensive.
